About Common Ground

Common Ground began in 2021 when founder Mara Ellison noticed how often useful public knowledge was trapped between academic papers and hurried headlines. She wanted a place for thoughtful readers who enjoy evidence but also want to know what an idea feels like in an ordinary kitchen, classroom or street. The first issue was assembled at a shared table with two notebooks, one borrowed laptop and an unreasonable amount of tea.

Our mission is to make complexity approachable without making it shallow. We publish carefully reported essays about science, culture, work, cities, learning and daily life. Our goals are practical: explain important terms, show the history behind current problems, include lived experience and leave readers with a question they can actually investigate.

By the numbers

Since launch, we have published 146 essays, worked with 38 contributors and hosted 19 free public workshops. Readers from 42 countries have shared notes, corrections and generous disagreements. We are a small independent project, so we value accuracy over volume and curiosity over certainty. If an article changes after a correction, we say so. That habit matters more to us than looking flawless.
